My personal journal of a path to become a filmmaker.

Adding one more to the ever growing list.

One things for sure, there are a lot of people who want to make it big as a filmmaker, myself included. With sites out there like YouTube, Google Videos, Myspace, everybody seems to want their 15 minutes of fame as soon as possible. The newest short film site I've found is a new reality show on Fox called The Lot. I've spent some time watching some of these short films. Some are good, and some are very very bad. And it makes me really think, what does it take to make it? How to do you find your way to the top of the list to be seen? Should I wait patiently for my turn? Or should I fight like there is no tomorrow? I feel that the first question is the correct answer. What makes a good film? Story? Cinematography? Acting? Editing? Lighting? An education in filmmaking? Sure, of course. But you have to have the desire, and motivation to learn each of these things. And I don't think some of these people get that when they make there "films." It may just be for fun, but if you really want people to take you as someone who seriously wants to become a filmmaker, you have to act like one first. I do criticize others, but I criticize myself the hardest. Because I want to learn more. I want to blur that line from armature to professional. And you know what, I don't see these bad short films as competition, I see them as motivation.

Hey there.

I don't know if this comment will reach you because it's been a while since you've been on... But what the hey! :)

I was searching for the "become a filmmaker game show" in google because I did not recall the name of the show. Mainly because I thought it was a crappy idea for a show. And you basically proved it to me in you blog in March.

Kudos. I agree with you one hundred percent. After I graduated, I have read more theory and every book in regards to film... from acting to sound to framing, etc. and I know I can make great films as i've always been acclaimed for taking perfectly framed photo's and video's... but enough about me.

Just wondering how everything is going with you. It's nice to see someone else take film seriously. We seem to be a rare breed. But Hollywood is like getting into politics, you have to talk a lot of bullshit. ;)

I'm in NY, and it's hard enough getting any job around here.. I'm going to end up saving up for an HD camera and film my own feature to send to festivals. It seems that short films don't quite make it as far as getting deals and dealing with agents, etc. But how else could we raise money to make a movie these days to make a decent film that actually thrills the mind awake?

We have a bunch in common though. Idea's float in my head and it's hard to contextualize my visions. Script and free writing has helped me greatly, but complete silence works sometime.

Would be cool to chat with you sometime,

Ben (hellfire@hellfire.tv)
